Market knowledge

What Prince Edward Island pre-retirees are actually asking about

Three rules that shape retirement and estate planning on Prince Edward Island, verified against the Island's Probate Act, Real Property Assessment Act and Income Tax Act on 2026-09-24.

Probate fees are $4 per $1,000 above $100,000

Under section 119.1 of the Probate Act, the fee is $400 for estates with a probate value of $50,001 to $100,000, and $400 plus $4 for each $1,000 or fraction above $100,000 for larger estates. A $1,000,000 estate pays $4,000. Smaller estates pay flat fees that start at $50.

Owner occupied assessments rise with CPI, capped at 5%

While a home stays owner occupied and continuously owned, its taxable assessment rises each year by the Island's CPI, with a floor of 0% and a ceiling of 5%, plus improvements, and not above the market assessment. A buyer starts from the full residential assessment, so selling and buying resets the base.

Age amount ends at $80,000; a 20% bracket starts at $200,000

The Island age amount of $6,510 at 65 is reduced by 15% of income above $36,600, so it reaches zero at $80,000. From the 2026 tax year a 20% provincial rate applies to taxable income over $200,000, with 19% from $142,520 to $200,000.

Island probate fees are charged on the gross value of the estate's assets, not the value net of debts, although life insurance paid to a named beneficiary is left out.
