West Virginia

Lead generation for financial advisors in West Virginia.

West Virginia has the fourth highest share of residents aged 65 and over of any state, at 21.9 percent, about 387,000 people. 2026 is the first tax year the state subtracts federally taxable Social Security in full at every income level.

Social Security leaves the West Virginia return in 2026, but the $8,000 senior deduction does not stack on top of it, so other retirement income needs its own plan.

What West Virginia pre-retirees are actually asking about

Three rules that shape retirement income and the family home in West Virginia, verified against the West Virginia Code and the West Virginia Tax Division on 2026-09-24.

2026 brings full Social Security relief at every income

From tax year 2026, West Virginia subtracts 100 percent of the Social Security benefits included in federal adjusted gross income. Filers above $50,000 of federal AGI, or $100,000 joint, were phased in at 35 percent for 2024 and 65 percent for 2025, so 2026 is their first full exemption year.

The $8,000 senior deduction does not stack

Filers 65 or older can subtract up to $8,000 of income per person, but that amount is reduced by other subtractions, including taxable Social Security. The Tax Division says you receive the higher of the two, so once taxable Social Security reaches $8,000, the age deduction is generally lost.

Homestead exemption: $20,000 off assessed value at 65

Homeowners 65 or older, or certified permanently and totally disabled, can exempt the first $20,000 of assessed value on the home they own and occupy as a residence. The owner generally must have been a West Virginia resident for the two consecutive calendar years before the tax year.

Older summaries describe West Virginia's Social Security break as limited to federal AGI of $50,000 or less single, or $100,000 or less joint. Those limits shaped the 2024 and 2025 phase in; from 2026 the full subtraction applies on both sides of the line.
